Jamie Carragher has hailed the signing of Alexis Mac Allister – but has one concern over the new Liverpool midfielder.
On Thursday, Liverpool confirmed the arrival of Mac Allister from Brighton for a bargain £35million.
The World Cup winner was one of the Seagulls’ best players in 2022/23 as they qualified for Europe for the first time in their history and finished just a handful of points behind the Reds in the Premier League.
Signing at least one new midfielder was a priority for Jurgen Klopp this summer, with James Milner, Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and Naby Keita departing Anfield at the end of their contracts.
The Argentine international is very highly-rated and was linked with various different clubs so it is real coup that Liverpool have bought him for a comparatively low fee and so early into the transfer window.
‘Well he’s certainly a good player, whether he’s a good signing we’ll see when the season starts,’ Liverpool legend Carragher told Sky Sports on Saturday.
‘It looks like he can play every position in midfield – which will help Liverpool. He looks a super talent.

‘Brighton are a brilliant team. The only thing I will say is, a lot of players who have come out of Brighton, haven’t replicated the Brighton form in other teams. Is that because they’re part of a special system at Brighton?
‘That will be interesting to see. But no, I think it’s a great signing considering the price as well. £35million is a steal for a World Cup winner – someone who has Premier League experience and he’s only 24.’
Carragher’s concern is well-founded, as several notable ex-Brighton stars have failed to live up to expectations after leaving the Amex for big money.

Marc Cucurella, Yves Bissouma and Neal Maupay all left last summer – for Chelsea, Tottenham and Everton respectively – and all could be considered the worst signing of the season.
But the Seagulls have produced several other great talents who have gone onto thrive elsewhere in the Premier League, namely Arsenal duo Ben White and Leandro Trossard as well as Newcastle defender Dan Burn.
Mac Allister may not be the only Brighton star on the move this summer, with Moises Caicedo still garnering much interest from the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea.
