Luis Diaz believes Lionel Messi winning Wolrd Cup was a debt settled by the football world
Liverpool winger Luis Diaz believes the football world "owes" Lionel Messi a World Cup due to his phenomenal career. The Paris Saint-Germain striker ended Argentina's 36-year wait for a World Cup title, beating defending champions France in a dramatic final at the Lusail Stadium.
After the efforts of Messi and Di Maria and the hat-trick of 23-year-old Mbappe, the two sides decided the winner in a penalty shootout in the 22nd World Cup final, and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez's performance allowed Argentina to finally win.
That made the Albiceleste the first South American side to win the World Cup since Brazil in 2002, and Diaz seemed delighted.
Diaz posted a picture of Messi kissing the World Cup trophy to his 3.6 million Instagram followers, with the caption: "It's all said and done. Football owes you."
Diaz did not play in this year's final in Qatar due to Colombia's poor performance in the qualifiers.
The winger, who has not featured for the Reds since October 9, suffered another major setback at the club's training camp in Dubai last week following his recovery from a knee injury he suffered in the 3-2 defeat at Arsenal.
He is expected to miss until the end of February. Liverpool return to action on Thursday and travel to Manchester City for the fourth round of their Carling Cup title defence.
