Liverpool new signing Arthur Melo flying to the UK after De Jong talks broke down

The transfer deadline today is at 11pm in England

Arthur Melo will join Liverpool on a season-long loan

Liverpool are close to finalising a loan deal for Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo.

The 26-year-old has agreed a season-long contract that can be extended with no option to make the agreement permanent.

Arthur, a Brazilian national, is expected to complete a medical test this afternoon when he arrives on Merseyside around lunchtime. The transfer deadline in Europe's top-flight Leagues is 11pm today.

Amid major injury setbacks this new season, Jurgen Klopp who once said that Liverpool didn't need a new midfielder changed his view and admitted that the Reds may need alternate options in the midfield.

The Liverpool manager said: "You can imagine we are working constantly on these kind of things, Klopp said.

"We spoke about reasons why sometimes it is not happening, sometimes too expensive, sometimes not the right player. Situations change, but one thing stays important, it needs to be the right player.

"We are working, but we will see if something will happen or not. I don’t know. It has to be the right player. Having injuries doesn't change that. We have to be 100 per cent convinced."

Arthur will be Liverpool's fifth signing this year after they landed Luis Diaz, Fabio Carvalho, Darwin Nunez and Calvin Ramsay.

It's understood that the Merseyside club were also in talks to land Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong who arrived the UK from Barcelona this week.
