With a history of success both on and off the pitch, the club has attracted some of the biggest names in world football. In this article, we will countdown the 10 most expensive Liverpool players of all time, based on the fee paid when they were transferred to the club.
From recent signings to historic transfers, these are the 10 most expensive players in Liverpool’s history.
10. Ibrahima Konate - £36 million from RB Leipzig
9. Sadio Mane - £37 million from Southampton
Jurgen Klopp's first prominent signing for Liverpool was Sadio Mane. A £37m fee was agreed with Southampton for the Senegal international forward.
Since his Premier League debut against Arsenal, Mane was constantly been on the ground running at Liverpool. His constant determination was what set the tone for his Liverpool career.
His 18 league goals in the 2019-20 season were crucial to the Reds' first Premier League win. Mane's signing was a tremendous success.
8. Mohamed Salah - £38 million from AS Roma
The Egyptian forward joined Liverpool from AS Roma in 2017 for a then-club record fee of £37 million . In his three seasons at Anfield, Salah has quickly cemented himself as one of the best players in Liverpool history .
He’s been instrumental in helping Liverpool win both the Champions League and Premier League, being named as PFA Player of the Year and African Footballer of the Year in 2018 and 2019 respectively . In his first season at Anfield, he broke the Premier League record for most goals scored in a 38-game season with 32 goals , and he also holds the record for most goals scored in a single Premier League campaign with 44 goals .
7. Fabinho - £43 million from Monaco
The Brazilian midfielder joined Liverpool from AS Monaco in 2018 for a fee of £43 million . In his two seasons at Anfield, Fabinho has made 89 appearances scoring 5 goals as Liverpool won both the Champions League and Premier League.
6. Diogo Jota - £45 million from Wolverhampton Wanderers
Singed from Wolves in a swap plus cash deal with Ki-Janna Hoever by Jurgen Klopp in 2020, Diogo Jota's impressive play made him a necessary back-up for Liverpool's formidable front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.
However, the Portuguese forward started trying to make the starting lineup instead. His first season at Liverpool saw him score 13 goals in all competitions despite an injury during the middle of the season. His second season saw him score 21 goals in all competitions. Some considered the money paid for Jota to be excessive, but he has proven his worth and was a clever business done by the Reds.
5. Luis Diaz - £50 million from FC Porto
The Colombian winger joined Liverpool from Porto in 2022 for a then-club record fee of £50 million . In his first season at Anfield, Diaz made 19 appearances scoring 2 goals and providing 2 assists as Liverpool won both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.
4. Naby Keita - £52.75 million from RB Leipzig
Naby Keita's impressive seasons at RB Leipzig motivated Liverpool to purchase him for over £50 million. This signing increased the Reds options in the midfield. However, Keita has not paid much back the too-high fee with his performances. He has been going from one injury to another, which has caused him to miss many games since his move to England,
And as a result, Jurgen Klopp had preferred Gini Wijnaldum, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho over the Guinea international.
3. Alisson Becker - £67 million from AS Roma
Alisson cost £67 million when he moved from Roma to Liverpool in 2018. The Reds lost the 2017/18 Champions League to Real Madrid which was blamed on Loris Karius' mistakes.
Following their defeat the Anfield club moved swiftly to fix their goalkeeper problems with the signing of Alisson.
As a liability, Simon Mignolet who onced impressed the Reds, prematurely preceded the Brazilian shot stopper as Liverpool's first-choice goalkeeper. Since then Alisson has ended Liverpool's goalie issues for good
2. Virgil van Dijk - £75 million from Southampton
The Dutchman is not only the most expensive Liverpool player of all time, but he’s also the world’s most expensive defender.
The fee paid for him in 2018 was a then-record amount for a defender, edging out the fee that Manchester City had paid for Benjamin Mendy just a few months prior.
In his two and a half seasons at Anfield, Van Dijk has been nothing short of a colossus. He’s been a part of a Liverpool side that has won the Champions League, as well as clinching the Premier League title last season – their first league title in 30 years.
He’s also been voted PFA Player of the Year and BBC Footballer of the Year, amongst other individual accolades.
1. Darwin Nunez - £85 million from Benfica
While others think he's not the most expensive player after a £64m fee up-front that could later rise to be £85m was agreed with Benfica, It's also apparent that part of the terms agreed for the add-ons involving Nunez transfer to be paid can be met within a year, and that will take the money paid for the Uruguayan ahead of that paid for Virgil van Dijk.
Liverpool signed Nunez from Benfica this summer for a fee that extends to £85 million following the sale of Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich.
The Uruguayan scored against Manchester City in the Community Shield on his season debut for the Reds.
