Liverpool sent top-four warning amid quiet transfer window

Liverpool have been sent a top four warning by former Man City star for their inactivity so far in the summer transfer window

Former Manchester City winger Trevor Sinclair believes there is a real possibility Liverpool will miss out on the top four in the Premier League this season.

The Reds battled back from adversity last campaign to secure a third-placed finish, winning eight of the final ten fixtures to complete a remarkable turnaround in form.

Jurgen Klopp's side will now be looking to challenge for the league title once again, having been boosted by the returns of defensive duo Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez.

But Sinclair is not convinced by the Reds and has highlighted the team's lack of squad depth as a concern.

Asked for his top-four prediction he told talkSPORT : "I know they’ve got Van Dijk back, but I’m a bit concerned for Liverpool.

"Just because they’ve not really invested any money especially in the midfield area. I think they’ve got some work to do before I start looking at them as being a real contender for the league.

"I’m just not sure they’ve got the depth. They can’t play Van Dijk every game. He’s is a top player but, coming back from a knee injury like he has, you’ve got to be really careful with him.

"You look at the captain Jordan Henderson and what’s going on with his contract, they’ve also lost Wijnaldum.

"The front four still look very dangerous and Jota looked very good in the Euros so I think he’ll have a real big impact again.

"But just defensively, and I hear Robertson has picked up an injury, it just seems to be a stuttering start to the season for Liverpool."
