Liverpool's Champions League qualification destiny remains in their own hands but Alan Shearer has reckoned what will happen in the end
Liverpool are on a roll with their top four destiny remaining in their own hands with just two games remaining.
But one of the Premier League's legendary players still reckons they'll miss out on Champions League qualification.
Jurgen Klopps side are unbeaten in their last eight domestic fixtures and top of the form table from matchday weekend 30 onwards.
A sensational 2-1 victory at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday with Alisson heading in during second half stoppage time become the first goalkeeper to score in the club’s 129-year history kept up that sequence going into the final week of the campaign.
Following Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Leicester City at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, Liverpool (63 points from 36 games) know that if they beat both Burnley and Crystal Palace, Brendan Rodgers ’ FA Cup winners (66 points from 37 games) can no longer accumulate more points than the Reds.
Athough if the Foxes defeat Tottenham Hotspur on the last day then Champions League qualification could come down to goal difference, currently 21 for Liverpool and 20 for Leicester City.
But both of them could make it in such circumstances if Chelsea (67 points from 37 games) fail to win at Aston Villa.
Despite Liverpool’s strong recovery in recent weeks, the Premier League’s all-time leading goalscorer Alan Shearer has made a bold claim about their chances that is unlikely to go down well with Kopites.
He told Premier League Productions: "I think Liverpool will miss out, just. "I know Burnley have looked like they have chucked the towel in already.
"But then Palace, with Roy’s last game and I know he has announced it [yesterday] – I think they will miss out and I don’t think they will win their last two games."
