Jamie Carragher makes Liverpool transfer claim after top four finish

Liverpool secured a third-place finish in the Premier League with a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace on the season final day

Jamie Carragher has hailed the importance of finishing in the top-four in the Premier League for the transfer activity this summer.

A 10-game unbeaten run, completed on the final day with a 2-0 triumph against Crystal Palace , saw Liverpool turn the campaign around to secure Champions League football next term.

At one stage, that appeared extremely unlikely for Jurgen Klopp's side but a fine sequence of results, accompanied by Leicester City's downturn in form, saw the tide change.

Carragher believes that could be decisive heading into the summer transfer window, outlining his belief that new additions are required.

"I think a lot of people, or definitely the people at Liverpool - supporters, players, staff, they’ve just wanted this season out of the way for a long time, certainly in the last few months," he said on Sky Sports' commentary.

"So to come out of it with the Champions League next season, financial gains, in terms of the summer, because there will need to be some changes to the team that Klopp has built in the last few years.

"Georginio Wijnaldum moving on, being one, right through the spine of the team they need players to come in and it’s going to be a lot easier to do that with this result and finding themselves in third position in the table."

Liverpool have been linked with important names as Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe but could be set for a competitive period in the transfer window, with the rest of the Premier League also expected to splash the cash.

A central-midfield successor to Wijnaldum may be on the cards, as well as a central defender having seen their back-line exposed following injury issues this term.
