'How has that happened' - Neville stunned by Liverpool's third place finish

Manchester United legend Gary Neville has been left stunned by Liverpool's third place finish ahead of Chelsea and Leicester this season

Gary Neville admits he’s stunned by the  Reds' third place finish this season but congratulated the old rivals on their impressive end to the season.

Back in March, the Premier League defending champions were down in eighth place but a 10-game unbeaten run, culminating with five consecutive victories, saw Jurgen Klopp’s side climb to finish third.

Neville, who had spent the last day of the Premier League season commentating on Manchester City’s 5-0 thrashing of Everton, could not hide his surprise when assessing the final table for the 2020/21 season on Sky Sports.

The Daily Mail quote Neville as saying: "Have they finished third? Have they finished third? How has that happened?"

Asked if it was an amazing achievement, Neville replied: “It is. Honestly, for them to lose Van Dijk – it had a massive impact on Liverpool but it also had a massive impact on City because they knew Liverpool couldn't come back from it. They were out.

"And once Liverpool were out that was it, they knew there was no one else equipped to compete with them.

"For Liverpool to come back from those six home defeats on the bounce - wow, champions losing six on the bounce at home.

"To come back the way in which they have, you have to give them real credit."
