The Liverpool legend has been heavily touted to take over from Jurgen Klopp in 2024 but could face the pressure of huge expectations
Glen Johnson has admitted it could be tough for Steven Gerrard to step into Jurgen Klopp's shoes if he takes the Liverpool job in 2024.
The Reds legend is impressing with Rangers in the Scottish Premier League and has been touted as a potential replacement for Klopp.
Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool manager confirmed he will leave Anfield when his new contract expires, whilst Gerrard is tied down at Rangers for the exact same amount of time.
That has led to the assumption the role will be offered to Gerrard once the current Liverpool boss steps aside.
Having lifted the UEFA Champions League and the Premier League title already in his time with the club, expectations are a lot higher on Merseyside than before the German's arrival.
As a result, Johnson, a former teammate of Gerrard for England and the Reds, has warned him that it could be tough to step into the gaping void Klopp will leave behind.
When asked if Gerrard should take the Reds job if it was offered to him in 2024, Johnson told The Warm-Up: "Yeah definitely. He's Mr Liverpool, he loves the city in and out and he's similar to Lamps, he's got the right temperament for it.
"It's one of those roles, where, with Liverpool doing so well, who would want to step into Klopp's shoes when he leaves?
"It's a difficult one, you kind of can't win. It's all about timing though, we have no idea what's going to happen in four years time, but when the door does open if Gerrard thinks it's the right time, I'm sure he'll take the job."
