Liverpool player ratings for the 2-0 defeat at home to Atalanta in the Champions League
Good save at near post from cheeky Gosens drive early on. No chance with the goals and decent clearances when needed.
Neco Williams 5
Targeted by Atalanta defence and struggled as a consequence, but didn’t stop offering himself going forward. Improved a little second half but both goals originated from his flank.
Joel Matip 7
No messing about when required to clear and commanded the defence well. Even turned up on the edge of the Atalanta area at one point. Solid after break.
Rhys Williams 6
Kept matters simple, read danger well and decent distribution first half, but slow to react for the second Atalanta goal.
Kostas Tsimikas 6
Swung in some decent crosses first half and involved in an ongoing battle with Hateboer. Exposed a little for the opener. Booked and subbed.
Gini Wijnaldum 7
Some good tackles and interceptions as Atalanta pressed hard during the opening quarter and positionally disciplined throughout. Subbed.
James Milner 6
Looked to move Liverpool forward but passing wasn’t always on point. On the end of some heavy challenges.
Divock Origi 5
Clobbered on several occasions and while regularly showing for the ball, he did little with it. Subbed.
Curtis Jones 6
Plenty of energy and sought to inject that into the Reds’ play during a dismal first 45 minutes. Kept at it after the break.
Mohamed Salah 6
Fire Liverpool’s only first-half shot over and wasn’t given much room in which to race. Subbed.
Sadio Mane 5
One or two moments of threat before the break but hounded out for the most part. Second half saw no improvement and appeared tired.
Fabinho (for Wijnaldum 61) 6
Solid tackles in the defensive midfield role.
Roberto Firmino (for Origi 61) 6
A couple of nice touches but couldn’t make much difference.
Andy Robertson (for Tsimikas 61) 5
Outjumped at the far post for Atalanta’s second.
Diogo Jota (for Salah 61) 6
Brought much-needed pace and directness to an otherwise poor attacking effort from Liverpool.
Takumi Minamino (for Matip 85)
Minutes.
