Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has had his say over what some fans perceive to be negativity from his Sky Sports colleague Martin Tyler towards the Reds
Jamie Carragher has defended Sky Sports commentator Martin Tyler over the long-running accusations by some Liverpool fans that he is biased against the Reds.
The 75-year-old Cheshire-born broadcaster has been commentating on top-flight football since the mid 1970s and worked for Granada TV in the north west in the 1980s.
He had been a cornerstone of Sky Sports football coverage since the Premier League began in 1992 and also commentates for various networks around the world.
However some Liverpool fans have taken a dim view of him since his unsettlingly ecstatic response to Anthony Martial scoring for Manchester United against the Reds in 2015.
In the build-up to Liverpool winning the Premier League in June, some fans were irritated by his repeated references to the club's three-decade wait for a top flight title and his performance in the first game after the championship was won when the Reds lost 4-0 at Manchester City.
In the wake of Liverpool's win over West Ham on Saturday evening, Reds legend Jamie Carragher - who has become a Sky Sports colleague of Tyler since joining them following his retirement from playing in 2013 - defended him after a link was posted to his excited commentary of Anthony Martial's goal against Brendan Rodgers' side which he greeted with a cry of "Oh yes!"
Carragher said: "I’m sure after 25 years of commentary you can get clips of Martin like that on every team, it was a goal when LFC were losing as well. Go back & listen to 'Collymore closing in.....'
"I see this after every LFC game! It’s absolute nonsense."
In response to a suggestion from one Twitter user that Tyler always sounds more excited when the home team scores as he gets caught up in the emotion around or has to shout louder to hear himself, Carragher responded: "Never thought of that! I’ll ask him!!"
Liverpool are next due to be on Sky Sports next Sunday afternoon when they travel to Manchester City to take on last season's League Cup winners.
