Jamie Carragher makes Premier League title prediction ahead of City clash

Sunday's Premier League showdown between last season's champions and runners-up could go some way towards deciding where the trophy will end up this season

Jamie Carragher insists Liverpool and Manchester City are the only two sides capable of winning the Premier League title this season despite strong starts from a number of other teams.

Southampton are the current surprise leaders following their 2-0 victory over Newcastle on Friday night, while the likes of 2015-16 winners Leicester , Tottenham, Everton and Wolves have all begun well.

Despite some have suggested we could be in store for another shock champion come the end of the campaign, Carragher is totally on a different perception of the season, believing that Liverpool and Manchester City are still the two teams who are head and shoulders above the rest.

Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the huge game on Sunday Carragher said: "I still can't envisage anyone else besides Liverpool or Man City winning the league. I just can't see that," Carragher said.

"I know Tottenham have started really well, I hope they have a great season and there are more challengers, but I just can't see anyone else lifting that league title besides the big two over the last few years."

Carragher admitted that the loss of Virgil van Dijk has dented his confidence in his former side retaining their title, but thinks it simply adds further intrigue to the battle for first place.

He added: "There's no doubt, I would be very strong in putting Liverpool as big favourites for the title but for the injury to Virgil van Dijk, who is not just one of Liverpool's top players, he's one of the top players in the Premier League.

"I think if something similar would have happened to Kevin De Bruyne at Man City, who is there top man, I think we'd say the same about City, so I think it makes for a more interesting race."
