Rio Ferdinand slams Harry Maguire and United as he explains Liverpool transfer success

Rio Ferdinand has hit out at Manchester United poor transfer policy in comparison to that of Liverpool's in the past few years

The former United player thinks the Red Devils need to mirror the Reds' decency in the market and address issues of poor defending before signing Jadon Sancho.

Ferdinand highlighted the way Liverpool signed Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk to shore up their backline and propel them forward as something his former side need to do themselves.

Speaking ahead of United's clash with Brighton and Hove Albion , Ferdinand told BT Sport: "Listen, you look at Liverpool the best team in the land.

"Issues in goalkeeping areas - Alisson, big signing. Issues at centre-back? Van Dijk, bang, they deal with it. Manchester United have not done that. This is not an issue we’re seeing that’s just happened the other day.

"I want Jadon Sancho to come to Man Utd, he’s a generational talent, he’s someone who will get fans off their seats, a Man Utd player.

"But does he solve the fundamental problems that I see happening with this team? Yes they’ve had a fantastic goals against record last season but there are moments in games, or before games even.

"Are you looking across the tunnel across that line thinking 'I’m going to have to be at my absolute best to get a chance against this Manchester United team'?

"I don’t think so - and that’s a problem for me."

Ferdinand also slammed Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof after their displays in the 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace, adding: "They did anything but set their stall out. They were slow and cumbersome.

"There were so many different mistakes. It was terrible to see and it disappoints.

"This is an area I have spoken about for many many months, and it has not been addressed. He [Solskjaer] could show them the Europa League semi-final and FA Cup semi-final as well [for poor performances]."
