Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has sent a stark Liverpool warning to his old side
Berbatov was speaking in an interview with talkSPORT promoting his new book 'My Way' when he compared two of English football giants Manchester United and Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool side in their last two campaigns have clinched the Premier League title and also won other major competitions outside home, adding to the number of achievements in the club's history.
Manchester United on the other hand have not won the league since 2013 with their most recent trophy coming in 2017 when they won the UEFA Europa League.
Asked if the Red Devils are making progress under Solskjaer, Berbatov sighed and said: "Probably small steps which sounds really ironic, funny, sarcastic if you want because not long ago United were always considered the team who were going to be near the top.
"Now it's a bit like, 'can we qualify for the top four?' This is now considered a success and it shouldn't be like this.
"But now times are different and Liverpool is the team that is dictating the tempo in the Premier League and in Europe as well.
"If United want to develop and get better they need to try and catch up to Liverpool because at the moment they are producing the best football."
Berbatov was also asked about the Premier League title race and he quickly name-checked Liverpool without offering up a specific prediction.
He added: "Liverpool is up there if they continue the way they are playing. And now with Thiago coming in they are going to become even better as a team with creativity.
"They are the team you should watch out for."
