Liverpool were reportedly closer to completing a move for Thiago about a week ago with the Reds believed to have reached personal terms with the playmaker.

There is need for Jurgen Klopp to strengthen his side's midfield and its creative abilities next season and initially it was former ace midfielder Coutinho who was heavily tipped for the service.

But recent reports about Thiago Alcantara have cooled down Liverpool links with Coutinho and former Aston Villa winger Gabriel Agbonlahor doesn't want the Premier League champions to shut their doors on the Brazilian who has formerly help them in the middle with superb brilliance.

Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho was Jurgen  Klopp's finest midfield player before he left Anfield two years ago, completing his dream move to Barcelona.

But last month the 28-year-old laid out an apology to Klopp on how he left the Reds and demanded a move back to Anfield.

Speaking to Stadium Astro YouTube channel Agbonlahor took sides with a potential Liverpool reunion for Coutinho insisting there are no better options.

"For me, I'd go out there and get Coutinho back, I'd probably say, ‘you have to apologise for the way you left, but come back'," he said.

“For me, he is what Liverpool are missing in there. You can even play Coutinho where [Roberto] Firmino plays if Firmino isn’t doing it. The way Firmino plays, it looks like he is just told by [Sadio] Mane and [Mohamed] Salah ‘we are having the shots'."

There have also emerged claims that Liverpool want Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang but Agbonlahor think it could have negative impact in the Reds' front three.

"So, if you went in and bought an [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang I think that could upset the way Liverpool play," he added.

"Because Salah and Mane wouldn’t get as many shots because Firmino is very unselfish – Coutinho needs to be the main man in the team, and at Liverpool, he would be.

"I think he would do a great job at Liverpool and the fans would forgive him and have him back."
