Jurgen Klopp has slammed referee Atkinson for denying Liverpool a penalty during their 1-1 draw with Leicester

The Reds missed out on the chance to stay seven point clear at the top of the Premier League table on Wednesday night after slipping off their early lead to Leicester City.

Harry Maguire late strike in the first-half cancelled out Sadio Mane's early opener, leaving Jurgen Klopp's men tussling for the winner until full time.

But Klopp is convinced his side were denied the chance to be back on the lead following Atkinson decision to rule-out a penalty protest when Naby Keita seems to have been brought down in the penalty area.

Klopp said at his postmatch news conference: "I would say it is a 100 per cent (goalscoring) chance – a situation where there is a goalscoring chance that tells the ref he has to give a red card. Not only is Sadio through, but I am pretty sure Mo was on the other side which gives you two against one against Schmeichel.

"It is the second time in a game where a striker of ours is brought down at the halfway line, and we treat it like it was I don’t know where! If that is not a real goalscoring situation, I don’t know what is.

"I don't know what he [Atkinson] thought in that moment, I think he had the best position.

"Usually I have to explain penalties which were penalties, and you ask me if it was a soft penalty. A penalty is a penalty.

"I don’t think you need a VAR for that penalty decision because the best position on the pitch was the ref again, but he doesn’t want to give it.

"I think we agree it was a penalty, but really very often I stand here when we got a penalty and have to defend it.

"There was no blood involved again today, but it's a penalty because one of our players is in the box. It is like it is. It won't change. Nothing to worry about, keep on going."
